How To Choose Swimming Pool Lighting

Installing a custom inground pool is the first step toward turning your backyard into a stunning oasis. Once you’ve selected the perfect pool style, you’ll also want to put some thought into how you’ll light the space.

Not only will the right pool lighting increase safety, but it can go a long way toward making the entire area aesthetically pleasing. As you create your custom pool design, consider these lighting tips.

Light Your Water Features

Lighting your water features can give your pool area a sense of magic and wonder. Consider lighting waterfalls from the underside, so the light dances off the water. You can also highlight the movement by aiming lights at the area where the water hits the surface of the pool.

Add Some Fire Features

Fire features are an excellent way to add high-impact lighting to your pool area. There’s nothing quite like the combination of a flickering flame and still, cool water. Fire bowls, high-end tiki torches, and other fire features will cast a beautiful light across the surface of the water. They can also add some extra warmth to the nearby patio, creating a cozy atmosphere for your nighttime gatherings.

Use Light to Increase Safety

Properly lighting your pool can help keep everyone safe. Try installing in-ground lights in or around your patio. This will provide extra illumination without having to worry about guests tripping over the lights, causing damage, or possibly being injured.

A large underwater pool light will illuminate the boundaries of the pool so no one accidentally falls in. Lighting walkways and steps will also help safely guide guests through the area.

Install Wall Lights

If your pool is installed close to your home, a pool house, or a garden wall, installing wall lights can also create an interesting effect. There are many different styles to choose from so you can easily match them to your landscaping and your overall pool design.

Light Up Nearby Structures

If you have a tiki bar, pergola, or other nearby structures, be sure to light them up as well. This will make your backyard look like a luxury resort and help to tie the space together.

Consider adding uplights along the bottom of the structure to highlight its architecture or stringing hanging lights to create a festive party atmosphere. You can also light up an outdoor kitchen with moonlighting, bistro lighting, and more.

Don’t Forget Landscape Lighting

When planning out your pool lighting, don’t underestimate the power of highlighting trees, plants, and other landscaping features. Underlighting trees can highlight branches and foliage, creating a dramatic effect. You can also experiment with different hues. For example, using lights with a pink or orange glow can create a tropical effect.
