How To Choose Your Swimming Pool Size

There are few things more exciting than working with a custom pool builder to design your new pool. Throughout the process, there are many decisions you’ll need to make. One of the most important is choosing the right size pool for your needs.

While this can seem like a daunting task, it’s fairly simple to narrow down your options. Start by asking yourself these five questions.

1. How Much Space Do You Have?

Start by looking at your backyard and considering how much space you have available. Remember that you’ll also need room for any other features you want to add, like a patio, firepits, or an outdoor kitchen. Also, consider whether you want to leave grass in your yard and if you’ll add any other landscaping.

Some areas also have residential pool regulations or requirements that impose size limitations. This can vary by city or even by neighborhood, so make sure you do your research.

2. Are There Any Constraints on Your Space?

As you’re evaluating your space, check to see if there are any constraints that may limit where you can put a pool. This may include overhead electrical lines, fences, property lines, and any landscaping that you want to keep in place. If you already have a patio, you’ll need to think about whether you want to build your pool off of it or create an entire new space from scratch.

3. How Do You Plan to Use Your Pool?

When deciding on the right-sized pool for your backyard, it’s helpful to think about why you want the pool to begin with. From throwing large parties to swimming laps, the overall purpose of the pool can help you narrow down your pool size and style options.

For example, if you plan to swim laps, you may need a larger rectangular-shaped pool. If entertaining and aesthetics are your primary concern, you may want a medium-sized pool with elegant waterfalls and fire features, or you may choose a smaller pool so you have room for a large patio and plenty of lounge furniture.

4. Who Will Be Using Your Pool?

It’s also important to ask yourself who will be using your pool. If the pool is mostly for adults, you’ll have a lot more flexibility in choosing your pool size. However, if you have children or plan to entertain younger guests, you may want a pool that has a shallow wading area and/or a beach entry. If you’ll have a mix of people, then you may want a larger pool with both shallow and deep ends so you can accommodate everyone comfortably.

5. What’s Your Overall Budget?

Once you have a general idea of the pool size you may need, it’s time to crunch the numbers. The pool size you choose will have a significant impact on your pool construction costs. It can also impact the cost of extras like your deck, spa, and safety features. Also, keep in mind that larger pools cost more to heat and maintain. As you weigh your options, remember that affordable pool financing can help you get the pool you really want without having to pay all of the expenses upfront.
